Class 4 Shingles: The Iowa Insurance Discount Most Homeowners Miss

By Tony Offerman · Storm & Insurance · September 2026

If you've had a roof replaced in Eastern Iowa in the last few years, there's a decent chance you were offered a Class 4 shingle and said no because it cost a little more. There's also a decent chance nobody told you it could have paid for itself through your insurance bill.

I'm going to explain what a Class 4 shingle actually is, why insurance companies care, and how to find out in one phone call whether it's worth it for your house. No sales pitch — some of you will read this and correctly decide it isn't.

    What "Class 4" means

Shingles get an impact rating from a lab test called UL 2218. A steel ball is dropped on the shingle from a set height, and the shingle is checked for cracks on the back. Class 1 survives a small ball from a low height. Class 4 — the highest rating — survives a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet, twice, in the same spot, without cracking through.

A 2-inch steel ball hits harder than most hail we see here. So a Class 4 shingle doesn't shrug off every storm, but it takes a lot more punishment before it's damaged in a way that leads to leaks.

That "before it leaks" part is what the insurance company cares about.

Why your insurer will pay you to install them

Hail claims are one of the most expensive things an Iowa homeowners insurer deals with. A roof that survives hail is a roof they don't have to buy. So most of the major carriers writing policies in Iowa offer a premium discount for a documented Class 4 roof.

The size of that discount is set by the carrier, not the state. In Iowa there's no law requiring it, unlike a couple of states south of us. From what our customers have told us after calling their agents, the discount has ranged from a few percent to a meaningful chunk of the premium, and it applies every year for as long as you own the house with that roof on it.

Over the 25- to 30-year life of a roof, a modest discount adds up to real money — often more than the difference in shingle cost on the day you install them.

The one phone call to make before you decide

Don't take my word for the number. Call your agent and ask three things:

    1. Do you offer a discount for a UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistant roof?
    2. How much, on my policy?
    3. What documentation do you need — and is there a cosmetic damage exclusion that comes with it?

That third question matters. Some carriers, when they give you the Class 4 discount, add an endorsement that says they won't pay for hail damage that is only cosmetic — dents and marks that don't affect whether the roof keeps water out. For a lot of homeowners that's a fair trade. For some it isn't. You should know which one you're signing up for before the roof goes on, not after the next storm.

If your agent says "we don't offer that," ask if any of their sister companies do. If the answer is still no, a Class 4 shingle is still a better roof, but the math changes and you should decide with that in mind.

    What we install

The impact-resistant shingle we put on most Class 4 roofs is Atlas Pinnacle Impact. It carries the UL 2218 Class 4 rating, comes with the same Scotchgard algae protection as the rest of the Atlas line, and it's backed by the Signature Select warranty. You can read more about it on our roofing products page.

We install it the same way we install everything else: photographed before, during, and after, and finished so you never have to think about it again.

When it's worth it — and when it isn't

    It's worth it if:

    • Your carrier offers a discount, and you plan to be in the house long enough for it to add up
    • Your roof is already at the end of its life or already has hail damage (if you're paying for a roof anyway, the upgrade cost is small)
    • You've been through a claim once and would rather not do it again

It probably isn't worth it if:

    • Your agent says no discount and you plan to sell within a few years
    • Your current roof is in good shape with plenty of life left — nobody should replace a working roof just to chase a discount

If your roof already has hail damage

Then you're in a different conversation, and a better one: your insurance may be paying for the roof anyway. In that case, upgrading to Class 4 usually means paying only the difference between the standard shingle your policy covers and the impact-resistant one — and then collecting the discount every year after. That's the best version of this deal.

Start with an honest inspection. We'll tell you whether there's damage, document it properly for your claim, and walk you through the Class 4 option if it makes sense. Our storm and hail damage page explains how we handle claims, and you can request a free inspection here or call 319-403-4334.
